Benefits of shading cattle- because they are too expensive to lose

Cattle shade provides a number of benefits for cattle and ranchers, including:

  • Reduced heat stress: Cattle that are exposed to high temperatures can experience heat stress, which can lead to decreased gains, weight loss, and even death. Shade can help to reduce heat stress by providing a cool, comfortable place for cattle to rest and avoid the sun.  Real Feel temperatures are as much as 30 degrees cooler than in the sun.
  • Increases Average Daily Gain: Cattle that have access to shade gain weight more efficiently up to 7% increased daily gain than cattle that do not. This is because shade helps to reduce the amount of energy that cattle expend on trying to cool down.
  • Feed Efficiency: Increases up to 4% animals are more sustainable.
  • Improved welfare: Cattle that have access to shade are more comfortable and have a lower panting score. This is because shade provides a place for cattle to escape the sun, rest, and socialize.

Recent university research has highlighted the significant benefits of providing shade to cattle, particularly in enhancing their welfare and growth.

A study conducted by Murdoch University in December 2024 examined the effects of shade on Black Angus steers in a commercial feedlot in Western Australia. The findings revealed that shaded cattle exhibited more positive behaviors, being described as “settled and sociable,” compared to unshaded cattle, which were more “agitated and anxious.” Additionally, shaded cattle demonstrated a modest increase in average daily gain (0.13 kg) over a 70-day period = 20lbs and were better able to thermoregulate during the hottest times of the experiment. This research underscores the importance of shade provision in improving cattle welfare and productivity.

Similarly, a study published in the Journal of Animal Science in 2024 examined the welfare and performance benefits of shade provision during summer for feedlot cattle in temperate climatic zones. The research highlighted that shaded cattle had increased average daily gain, improved feed efficiency, and better health and welfare markers compared to unshaded cattle. These findings emphasize the positive impact of shade on cattle well-being and growth.

Furthermore, research published in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science in 2023 explored the economic sustainability of shade design for feedlot cattle. The study found that shade alleviated heat stress responses in cattle, leading to improved feed conversion and increased average daily gain. This research suggests that implementing shade structures can be a cost-effective strategy to enhance cattle performance and welfare.

Collectively, these studies provide compelling evidence that providing shade to cattle not only improves their welfare by reducing heat stress but also enhances growth performance and feed efficiency.

Better weight gain

University of Kentucky’s Animal Research Center determined that beef cows gained an additional 1.25 lb per day and calves gained an additional 0.41 lb per day with the use of portable shades during the spring and summer.

University of Missouri’s research found shade increased the overall pregnancy rate of breeding cows by 40%.

University of Kentucky’s Animal Research Center determined steers in a feedlot gained an average of 0.89 lb per day more when shade was provided.

The University of Arkansas found that providing artificial shade resulted in an additional daily gain of more than 20% compared to cattle with no shade.

North Dakota State University found that cooling the ground cattle are standing and lying on a very important function of shade to reduce stress in cattle.
